Baby name question? Kind of Random?

Well, my name is Katya (short for Katarina). My parents call me Katarina, but when I was younger that was too much of a mouthful for my friends. So it shortened it to Kat or Katya by my school friends and it just stuck. My parents still call me by my full name, Katarina, and my friends still call me Katya. (KAH tee uh). I think if you intend to call your child something from the day they are born (like you know you want a child called Maddy) then you should just name them that. However, sometimes parents intend to have their child called by their full name and it just gets shortened for convenience. (It's a lot easier to say "Hey Kat can I borrow a pencil?" than "Hey Katarina can I borrow a pencil?")
